[594.20] Law firms instructed to remain closed during MCO: Malaysian Bar

..........................................
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar said today that it was contacted by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, requesting for law firms to be closed during the Movement Control Order (MCO).
This was after the Cabinet decided on Friday to allow several economic sectors to operate in phases on condition they adhere strictly to health and safety guidelines.
Services “incidental to legal practice” were amongst the sectors allowed to operate, in the list that was released by Minister of International Trade and Industry (Miti) Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, following the announcement by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to extend MCO into the third phase from April 15-28.
“The reason advanced by Takiyuddin seems to suggest that based on his conversation with Azmin, the Miti media statement lacks specifics and a clear definition of ‘legal services’,“ said the Malaysian Bar in a statement.
“The Bar Council was informed that the Government will provide clarification and a standard operating procedure for the legal sector to Members of the Bar, upon discussion with the National Security Council (NSC).”
The Bar Council will monitor the situation and inform members once there is more clarity concerning this matter.
