No Requirement for NRIC Numbers of Staff Members Who Accept Service of Documents

The Bar Council is aware that staff members of law firms who accept service of documents on behalf of their employers are commonly requested to disclose their full name and National Registration Identity Card (“NRIC”) number on the sender’s acknowledgment slip.

In light of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (“PDPA”) which came into force on 15 Nov 2013, this practice is becoming less common, particularly as law firm staff members who are well-informed regarding the provisions of the PDPA are reluctant to divulge their NRIC numbers and/or other personal details.

Members of the Bar are advised that the recording of a person’s NRIC number is not a requirement under the law; it would suffice for the staff member to provide his/her full name and the law firm’s rubber stamp on the sender’s acknowledgement slip when accepting service of documents on behalf of a law firm.

Please be guided accordingly.
